After the Vietnam war had ended, Thai's mother managed to smuggle herself and her daughter to Thailand. There, she was forced to several refugee camps before arriving at a camp in Phanat Nikhom, where Thai was born. It's been his lifelong dream to visit that place where he was born, and possibly gain some perspective on what his mother went through.
Also, we hear the beaches there are pretty sick.
